Eco friendly cleaning

 "You are waaaaay cooler than your feed"

Dat het niet zo heel goed gaat met het milieu dat moge duidelijk zijn. Aangezien dit de planeet is met al mijn spullen en waar ik het best gezellig heb met Johann is het tijd om na te denken: wat kan ik doen om het milieu te ontlasten? Zo kan iedereen een steentje bijdragen.

En om gelijk maar iets heel erg raars toe te geven: ik ben dol op schoonmaakfilmpjes kijken op YouTube. Ik weet dat het heel raar is maar ik word er heel rustig van. Je vindt vooral Amerikaanse accounts die allemaal een bepaald type schoonmaakmerk gebruiken en tapijt hebben. Ik kijk wel het liefst naar filmpjes die een beetje vlot zijn gemonteerd en ze moeten wel alles optillen en afnemen, anders heeft het ook weinig zin. Ik vind schoonmaken zelf ook niet zo erg en het is niet dat ik met drie huisdieren en een bedrijf aan huis veel keuze heb. 
Het probleem met veel schoonmaakspullen is dat zij veel chemicalien bevatten die zowel het grond als oppervlakte water belasten. Met name het oppervlakte water, denk aan sloten en meren waarmee vervolgens ook weer wordt gesproeid door boeren. Maar uiteraard wil je wel een schoon huis.
Dus wat zijn de alternatieven, die makkelijk zijn te maken en ook nog eens goedkoop zijn?

- Azijn is da bom. Azijn maakt goed schoon omdat het zuur is en daarom werkt het ook prima als ontkalker. Doe een scheutje in je wasmachine als ontkalker en het schijnt ook te werken als wasverzachter. En je was stinkt niet naar azijn als je daar eventueel bang om mocht zijn. Uiteraard wel ook (milieuvriendelijke) wasmiddel toevoegen. 

- Vodka, voor de schoonmaker die niet wil? Nou dat werkt ook maar alchol ontmet en het maakt minder strepen op ruiten en spiegels omdat alchol sneller verdampt dan water. 

- Baking soda, in contact met water kan het zuur opnemen en het neemt makkelijk kleur op en het neemt geur op. 

Recepten om te proberen:

- Azijn:  1 gelijke deel water, 1 gelijke deel azijn en eventueel een druppel etherische olie maakt een prima schoonmaakmiddel. Ik neem hiermee regelmatig de keuken af en je kunt er erg goed de koelkast mee schoonmaken. Ook oppervlakten met veel kalkaanslag kun je goed schoonmaken met azijn.

- Vodka, 1 deel vodka, twee delen water, prima ruiten reiniger en ook geschikt voor spiegels.

- Baking soda, strooi 4 eetlepels baking soda op de bodem van je afwasmachine en giet daar witte wijnazijn op, laat even bruisen en zet dan de afwasmachine op een reinigingsprogramma. Alle nare geurtjes zijn verdwenen.

* Let op: azijn, vodka en baking soda niet gebruiken op poreuse ondergrond zoals marmer of ander gesteente.

That things haven’t been going well for the environment, I assume is clear to everyone by now. And seeing as this planet has all my stuff on it and I do enjoy myself quite a lot here with Johann, it’s now time to truly start thinking about what I can do to help the environment. What can we all do to make a difference?
I must admit something embarrassing to you at this point: I enjoy watching cleaning videos on YouTube. I know it’s weird, but it relaxes me. Most videos are from American channels, who all use their own special brand of cleaning products and have carpet in their homes. I do prefer videos that have snappy editing, though, and they do have to actually pick everything up and dust it off, because otherwise it doesn’t really make much of a difference, does it? Personally, I don’t mind cleaning. Not that I really have much choice in the matter with three pets and a home business, but still.
The problem with most cleaning products, however, is that they contain a lot of chemicals that contaminate both the ground and the water. Especially the water is a big issue. Just think of all the ditches and lakes where our used water ends up and which the farmers use again to irrigate their land. But naturally, you do want a clean home.

So, what are some alternatives that are easy but cheap at the same time?

- Vinegar is da bomb. Let me tell you. Vinegar cleans well because it’s an acid, which also means that it works great as a descaling solution as well. Pour some in your washing machine as a descaling solution, for example, and apparently it also works as a fabric softener. Oh, and don’t worry, your laundry won’t smell like vinegar once it comes out of the machine. Of course, do add some (environment-friendly) washing detergent.

- Vodka. For the cleaner who doesn’t want to do it anymore? Well, it also works as a disinfectant and it leaves behind fewer stripes on windows and mirrors when you use it to wash them, because alcohol evaporates more easily than water.

- Baking soda. When used with water, it can soak up acids. It also takes away any colour stains and nasty smells.

Recipes to try out:

- Vinegar: 1 part water, 1 part vinegar, and perhaps a drop of essential oil and you’ve made a wonderful cleaning product. I always use this to wipe down the kitchen counters and the dining table. And on top of that, it also works great to clean your fridge with. Or on lime scale.

- Vodka: 1 part vodka, 2 parts water. Works great to clean windows, but is also suitable for mirrors.

- Baking Soda: scatter 4 tablespoons of baking soda over the bottom of your dish washer and pour some white wine vinegar over it. Leave it to bubble for a moment and then turn on your dishwasher and run a regular programme. All nasty smells will have disappeared.

*Please mind: do not use vinegar, vodka or baking soda on porous materials such as marble or other stone.
