Eco friendly laundry detergent

Na zeep, shampoo en schoonmaakmiddelen is het nu tijd voor: wasmiddel. Dit artikel is in stand gekomen samen met de Instagram pod waar ik al heel lang in zit. Ik geloof niet dat we heel effectief zijn qua algoritme resultaten maar we overleggen over van alles. Dus dank aan Meatball-inc, (een lang verhaal deze naam) voor deze blogpost!
Eerst weer een mythe weghalen die ik vaak online tegenkom:
_ “Gebruik biolgische wasmiddelen vanwege SLS en Fosfaat.” Het is sinds de jaren ‘90 al niet meer in Nederland toegestaan om fosfaat in was-of schoonmaakmiddelen te gebruiken. SLS komt nog wel voor maar is al volledig biologisch afbreekbaar. In 2017 is dit besluit voor de hele EU genomen.
Gebruik biologische wasmiddelen omdat er in productie gebruik wordt gemaakt van biologische grondstoffen die niet belastbaar zijn voor het milieu. Dát is de grote reden om dit doen. Alle “slechte”grondstoffen worden tegengehouden door ons waterzuiveringsssysteem maar die moet wel steeds harder werken. Duurzame grondstoffen putten ons milieu minder uit. In het geval van landbouw is dit overigens wel een probleem: met kunstmest en bestrijdingsmiddelen die terecht komen in ons grondwater wat niet alleen weer gebruikt wordt voor de gewassen maar ook de biodiversiteit aantast. En hiermee onze gehele kringloop.
Wasnoten, wa-sei of waspoeder?
Om te beginnen met wasnoten: waarom zou je dit gebruiken? Wasnoten zijn ongeveer 250 wasbeurten te gebruiken waarna je ze bij het gft afval kunt gooien. Hiermee zijn ze dus niet heel belastend voor het milieu. Op het moment dat je voor wasnoten van het merk: Seepje gaat weet je dat deze Fair Trade zijn gewonnen waarna ze bij een sociale werkplaats zijn verpakt. Maar maakt het ook goed schoon? Wasnoten ontvetten minder goed dan reguliere wasmiddelen en heeft ook geen bleekmiddelen. Dus heb je een echt vieze was zou ik ze persoonlijk niet gebruiken. Ook heb ik over ervaringen gelezen dat de noten wel eens strepen achterlaten. En ook de actieve wasstof: saponine moet worden tegengehouden door ons zuiveringssysteem.
Dan het was-ei. Ik probeerde zelf deze van Leven zonder afval. Ik vond de was lekker ruiken en ik had ook het idee dat het schoon werd, al vond ik wel veel zeep vrijkomen en het grootste nadeel vond ik dat het ei niet mee gecentrifugeerd kon worden. Ik moest dus eerst het wasprogramma aanzetten, dan het ei zoeken in de zeiknatte was en dan nog de was centrifugeren. Eh ik heb daar dus geen zin in. Ik vind het ook niet leuk om bij te houden hoeveel wasbeurten ik ongeveer heb gehad. Is natuurlijk heel lui van mijn kant maar goed.
Dan de wasmiddelen zoals: Ecover, Klok, Sonnet en Marcel’s Green soap. Al deze wasmiddelen bevallen goed al vond ik persoonlijk de Sonnet iets minder lekker ruiken. Deze biologische wasmiddelen zijn allemaal minder milieubelastend en maken goed schoon. Het voordeel van Klok is dat het ook in een kartonnen verpakking komt waardoor je de verpakking bij het oud papier kunt gooien. Het voordeel van Marcel’s green soap is dat alle verpakkingen zijn gemaakt uit gerecycled plastic. Dit zijn ook factoren om rekening mee te houden.
Wat kun je verder doen?
-Volgens milieudefensie help je ook door minder heet te wassen. Let dus goed op of je de machine elke keer 90 graden moet laten draaien. Draai ook alleen met een volle trommel en al is het water niet te hard in jouw regio dan kun je ook minder wasmiddel gebruiken. De waterhardheid kun opvragen bij jouw waterleidingbedrijf.
- Gebruik minder vaak de droger en hang de was lekker buiten op zodra het weer het toestaat. Voordeel daarvan is ook dat je was heerlijk gaat ruiken.
- Een heel goed alternatief voor wasverzachter is witte wijnazijn. Het is niet alleen voordelig maar het maakt je was zacht en het ontkalkt je wasmachine.
- En tenslotte: weeg af hoeveel je gebruikt. Niet meer dan aangeraden hoeveelheid en bij een niet al te vuile was mag het ook iets minder zijn.
- Koop minder synthetische kleding. Met het wassen van onze kleding komen er ontelbare, kleine plastic deeltjes in de wasmachine en hiermee in ons water. Kijk ook eens bij Guppy friend om dit enigszins tegen te houden of koop meer kleding van linnen.

Now that we’ve covered soap, shampoo and cleaning products, it’s now time for… laundry detergent! This article came about in corporation with the Instagram pod that I’ve been in for a long time. I don’t think we’ve come very far yet when it comes to algorithm results, but we discuss pretty much anything. So, you can thank Meatball Inc (how we got that name is a long story) for this blog post.
First, let me debunk a myth that I come across a lot:
“Use organic laundry detergent because of the SLS and phosphate in regular detergent.” It has been illegal to use phosphate in cleaning products in The Netherlands since the 90s. SLS is still used, but it’s completely biodegradable. And since 2017 this is also the case for the whole of the EU.
Use organic laundry detergent, because they use natural resources that aren’t taxing on the environment. That is the main reason to do this. All of the “bad” chemicals are filtered out of our drinking water thanks to our water treatment plants, but those do have to work a lot harder nowadays. Sustainable natural resources are less harmful to the environment. In the case of farming, one major issue with using artificial fertiliser and pesticides is that these chemicals also seep down into our groundwater, which is not only used to water the crops, but also affects biodiversity.
Soap nuts, laundry eggs, or washing powder?
To start with the soap nuts: why would you use them? Soap nuts last for about 250 wash cycles, after which you can throw them away along with your other organic waste. Because of this, they’re not very taxing on the environment. When you buy soap nuts from the brand Seepje, you also know that they’re Fair Trade and packaged at a social workplace. But do they clean your clothes?
Soap nuts are less effective when it comes to degreasing, and also does not bleach. So, when you have a truly dirty wash, I personally wouldn’t recommend using them. I also read that in some cases soap nuts can leave behind stripes on your clothing.
Then, the laundry eggs. Personally, I’m currently using the ones from Leven Zonder Afval (Life without Waste). They smell great and my laundry was actually clean when it I took it out of the machine, but I did think there was quite a lot of soap, and the biggest downside is that you can’t spin dry the laundry with the egg still in it. That means I have to turn on the washing program, then look around for the egg in my heavy wet laundry, before finally spin drying it. And I don’t feel like doing all of that. I also don’t like having to keep count how many washing cycles I’ve done. Of course, that’s also just lazy on my part, but still.
Then, washing powder, like Ecover, Klok, Sonnet and Marcel’s Green Soap. All these were great, even though I didn’t love the smell of the Sonnet one. These organic laundry detergents are less harmful to the environment and actually clean your clothes too! One positive of Klok’s is that it also comes in carton packaging, which means you can simply throw it out with your paper waste. A positive for Marcel’s Green Soap is that all packaging is made out of recycled plastic. These are aspects to pay attention to as well when you want to live more environmentally friendly.
What else can you do?
According to the Dutch non-governmental organisation for environmental protection, it also helps when you do your washing at a lower temperature. So, do think about whether you really do need that 90 degrees program every single time.
Use your tumble dryer less and hang your clothes to dry outside when the weather allows it. Another plus point is that your laundry will also smell great.
A good alternative to laundry softener is white wine vinegar. It’s not only cheap, but it also makes your laundry soft to the touch, and descales your washing machine at the same time.
And finally: measure the amount of laundry detergent you’re using for each cycle. Don’t use more than what it states on the packaging, and when your laundry isn’t too dirty, you can even use less. This can end up saving you a lot of laundry detergent.
